Starbridge Media Group Releases Second Book Featuring South Carolina Women’s Basketball Coach Dawn Staley as Part of NCAA Grant Program

University of South Carolina and Starbridge release “Healthy Heroes” comic book in latest installment of three-book series to promote NCAA women’s basketball

Starbridge Media Group, Inc. has released “Healthy Heroes,” the second comic book created as part of a season-long literacy and community initiative on behalf of Coach Dawn Staley and the University of South Carolina women’s basketball program, Starbridge CEO Jamie Crittenberger announced today.

“Healthy Heroes” is a continuation of the “Heroes” series produced for South Carolina by Starbridge. In the latest release, women’s basketball Head Coach and former Olympian Dawn Staley uses her own personal childhood as backdrop to teach kids about the importance of practicing healthy lifestyle habits, from eating well to getting the right amount of sleep and exercise. It also highlights the negative results of an unhealthy lifestyle, in school as well as in athletics. The “Healthy Heroes” comic book was strategically released at the start of 2010, just as families, parents and children alike were making New Year’s resolutions to exercise more and eat healthier.

Similar to the first book (“Hard Work Heroes”) in the campaign, “Healthy Heroes” contains a free ticket voucher for children to attend a South Carolina women’s basketball game, in this case against SEC foe Auburn, on January 17 at Colonial Life Arena.  To further engage the community and teach children about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle, the University of South Carolina organized a Health Expo on January 17, coinciding with the ticket promotion presented in the comic book.

The third and final installment of the 2009-10 “Heroes” series, as part of the NCAA grant initiative, will be distributed in February. Starbridge also created and released a book in support of the University of South Carolina women’s basketball program during the 2008-09 season.

“Starbridge is excited to be able to use its creative capabilities to address important and pressing issues in today’s society like proper nutrition, exercise and diet,” said Starbridge President Ken Hutman. “We hope that children across the Carolinas will connect with the lessons in this story, and use them for inspiration to be physically fit and to live healthier lives.”
